Saatva Zenhaven Latex Mattress Review: What Does It Really Feel Like?

Choosing a mattress online can be difficult because the specifications don't really tell you what sleeping on it will feel like. A mattress can look impressive on paper and still feel too soft, too firm, or simply different from what you expected.

The Saatva Zenhaven Latex Mattress takes an interesting approach. Instead of giving you only one firmness option, it has two sides: a softer Luxury Plush side and a firmer Gentle Firm side. That means the feel can be changed by simply turning the mattress over.

My First Impression of the Zenhaven Mattress

The first thing I noticed about Zenhaven was the way the latex responded when I lay down.

It didn't have the slow, sinking sensation that you typically associate with traditional memory foam. Instead, there was some cushioning underneath my body, but I could still feel the mattress pushing back slightly.

That made it relatively easy to change positions.

I started with the Luxury Plush side because I generally wanted a little more cushioning. Lying on my side, the surface felt softer around my shoulders and hips, while the mattress still had a responsive feel underneath.

It wasn't the kind of softness where you immediately disappear into the mattress.

What Does the Luxury Plush Side Feel Like?

The Luxury Plush side is the softer of the two options.

When I spent time on this side, the first thing I noticed was the additional cushioning. My shoulders and hips felt more comfortably supported when lying on my side.

For someone who likes a softer mattress, this side makes sense.

However, I'd describe the sensation as cushioned rather than extremely soft. The latex still has some bounce and responsiveness, so moving around doesn't feel difficult.

That's an important distinction if you're comparing Zenhaven with a traditional memory-foam mattress.

If you like the feeling of being surrounded by a mattress, this may not feel as deep. If you like cushioning but still want to move easily, the latex feel may be more appealing.

How Does the Gentle Firm Side Feel?

Flipping the mattress changes the experience quite noticeably.

The Gentle Firm side feels more lifted and supportive. There is less of that initial cushioning, and you feel more immediate push-back from the mattress.

I found this side more suitable when I wanted a firmer surface beneath me.

If you normally sleep on your stomach, or simply dislike the feeling of sinking into a mattress, this is probably the side you'd want to try first.

The difference between the two sides is actually one of the most useful things about the Zenhaven. You're not getting two sides that feel almost identical. There is a noticeable change in firmness and surface feel.

Is Zenhaven Good for Side Sleepers?

If you sleep mostly on your side, I'd start with the Luxury Plush side.

Side sleeping puts more pressure around the shoulders and hips, so having additional cushioning can make the surface feel more comfortable.

That doesn't automatically mean every side sleeper will prefer it, though. If you are a side sleeper who likes a firm mattress, the Gentle Firm side may still be worth trying.

This is where personal preference matters more than a simple “best mattress for side sleepers” label.

What About Back Sleepers?

Back sleepers have more flexibility because either side can work depending on the feel they prefer.

The Luxury Plush side provides a softer, more cushioned sensation, while Gentle Firm feels more supportive and responsive.

If you like your mattress to have a little give when you lie down, I'd lean toward Luxury Plush.

If you prefer feeling more supported on top of the mattress, Gentle Firm makes more sense.

Is Zenhaven Comfortable for Stomach Sleepers?

Stomach sleepers often don't want an overly soft surface.

When a mattress feels too soft, some people may feel like their midsection sinks more than they would prefer. For this sleeping position, the Gentle Firm side is the more logical place to start.

The firmer surface provides a more lifted feeling and doesn't have the same amount of cushioning as Luxury Plush.

Of course, body weight and personal sleeping habits can change how any mattress feels, so there isn't one firmness level that works for everyone.

What I Like Most About the Reversible Design

The reversible design is probably the most practical feature of Zenhaven.

Imagine buying a mattress because you think you want something soft. After a few weeks, you realize you actually sleep better on a firmer surface.

With a conventional single-sided mattress, you're stuck with that decision.

With Zenhaven, you can flip the mattress and try the other side.

That doesn't mean the mattress will be perfect for everyone, but it does give you more flexibility than having only one fixed comfort level.

Does the Latex Feel Different From Memory Foam?

Yes, and this was one of the easiest differences to notice.

Memory foam typically responds slowly when you press into it. Latex generally responds faster.

With Zenhaven, when I changed positions, the mattress responded fairly quickly instead of holding the shape of my body for a long time.

The result is a more buoyant feeling.

Some people will love that responsiveness. Others who specifically want the deep, slow-sinking sensation of memory foam may prefer a different type of mattress.

Does Zenhaven Feel Too Bouncy?

The latex does have some bounce, but I wouldn't describe it as feeling like an old-fashioned spring mattress.

The response is more controlled.

You can feel the mattress pushing back when you move, but you're not simply bouncing around on the surface.

For me, the responsiveness was actually useful because it made changing positions feel easier.

How Does Zenhaven Perform During the Night?

The most important part of any mattress isn't how it feels for five minutes in a showroom. It's how it feels after several hours.

That's where the two-sided design becomes interesting.

On the softer side, the cushioning makes settling into bed feel more comfortable if you prefer a gentler surface.

On the firmer side, the mattress feels more stable and lifted.

So if your preferred feel changes from night to night, or even over time, having two options gives you some room to experiment.

Does Zenhaven Sleep Hot?

Temperature is very personal, so I wouldn't say any mattress can guarantee a cool night's sleep for everyone.

However, Zenhaven's latex construction is designed with airflow in mind. The mattress uses vented latex, while its cover includes breathable materials and wool.

Compared with a dense, slow-response foam mattress, the construction feels more open and responsive.

Your sheets, room temperature, clothing, and individual sleeping habits will still have a major effect on how warm or cool you feel at night.

Who Is Zenhaven Probably Best For?

After considering the two different sides, I think the mattress makes the most sense for people who aren't completely certain about their ideal firmness.

It could also be interesting for couples who don't have exactly the same preference for a soft or firm mattress.

I'd especially consider it if you want:

  • A latex mattress with a responsive feel

  • Two different firmness options

  • More cushioning without a deep sinking sensation

  • A firmer option when you want more push-back

  • Flexibility to change the feel later

  • A mattress suitable for different sleeping positions

Who Might Not Like It?

Zenhaven isn't necessarily going to satisfy everyone.

If your ideal mattress is extremely soft and gives you that deep “sinking into a cloud” feeling, the latex response may feel too firm or too springy.

Likewise, if you want an extremely firm, rigid sleeping surface, even the Gentle Firm side may not match your preference.

The best mattress depends heavily on how you personally like to sleep.

My Overall Take

The most interesting thing about the Saatva Zenhaven Latex Mattress isn't simply that it's made with latex.

It's the fact that you can change the feel.

I could see someone starting with the Luxury Plush side because they want more cushioning, then switching to Gentle Firm after realizing they prefer a firmer surface. That's a useful option to have when you're buying a mattress without being able to physically test it for an extended period.

The two sides also make the mattress easier to evaluate based on sleeping position. Side sleepers may prefer the additional cushioning of Luxury Plush, while stomach sleepers or people who prefer stronger push-back may gravitate toward Gentle Firm.

Ultimately, I wouldn't describe Zenhaven as a mattress that's automatically perfect for everyone. I'd describe it as a flexible latex mattress for people who want more than one comfort option.

And that's probably the biggest reason to consider it: you're not making a single firmness decision and hoping you got it right. You have another side to try if your first choice doesn't feel quite right.
